Bespoke tailoring and Savile Row

In Saturday's issue of Mint, Vir Sanghvi makes a very valid point about not wanting to pay through his nose for a branded jacket costing upwards of Rs 1 lakh (read: Versace, Prada, YSL and the lot). They are mostly made-to-measure and will probably go out of style by the end of the season. Also, the Indian shopper's 'value for money' mindset will be jolted out of self-imposed reverie after just one glimpse at the price tag (I know mine will!).

Says Sanghvi:
"If you have the money to pay Savile Row prices then, of course, you must. A well-cut suit here is a work of art and you are paying for craftsmanship and quality that will last decades."

But what of poor mortals like me who desperately need a suit but cannot find tailors to even stich a decent shirt? Woe is me!
