Five-star fetish
In our November issue, we shared news about Hermès tying up with Khanna Specialty Retail & Distributors to open its first store in India. Now concrete plans are in place to open a store at the Oberoi Hotel in Delhi. Hermès CEO Patrick Thomas has said the first store is all about establishing a presence in the country and has clearly ruled out retailing from a luxury mall. A store in Mumbai is expected in two years time.

‘Leiber’rating experience

Leiber has partnered with Marigold Impex, a private distribution company in India, to retail handbags, luggage and eyewear out of its first store in Delhi in late 2008. Leiber products are already available at Xess in Mumbai.

Reliance to bring down St Regis
If Anil Ambani has his way, the prestigious St Regis Hotel may soon dot the Mumbai skyline. According to a recent news report, Reliance-Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (R-ADAG) is in talks with the New York-based Starwood Hotels and Resorts to jointly float a special purpose vehicle (SPV) in which R-ADAG will hold a majority stake. It is likely that the SPV may launch new brands for the hospitality business in India.

New ventures
Licensing pioneer Pierre Cardin, who was recently on a business tour of Asia, has signed two new agreements in the continent. While one is a licensing agreement in Vietnam, the other is a joint venture in Mumbai. According to this agreement, all ‘Made in India’ Cardin products will now be distributed by Pierre Cardin Fashion Private Ltd, located in the Indian metropolis.
