Rewriting the fashion brief

Lawyer-turned-high fashion retailer Charu Sachdev is gearing up to bring Jean-Paul Gaultier to India

By Zahra Khan

A lawyer by education and now CEO of TSG International Pvt Ltd, 28-year-old Charu Sachdev is no stranger to high fashion and luxury. A scion of the New Delhi-based India Export House family, Charu has been responsible for successfully launching the Italian luxury brand Moschino in India.

Armed with a degree from the London School of Economics and a Masters in Law from University College, London, Charu says about her choice of profession, “My family has always been in fashion. My father, Ashok Sachdev, studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York and started his career at Henri Bendel. He then moved to India in the sixties to start his garment manufacturing and export business. In fact, he was a pioneer in this field in India. So I had a natural inclination towards fashion, especially the business of fashion. The legal background is an added advantage.”

A permanent fixture at Delhi’s high society soirées and extremely fashion forward herself, Charu is now looking forward to the launch of two more luxury brands in New Delhi next year – Jean-Paul Gaultier and Alberta Ferretti. In fact, the former enfant terrible of French fashion was in India recently and is rumoured to have finalised the details for his big launch in the country. However, Charu prefers to keep mum about any grand celebrations. All she is willing to say for the moment is, “We are looking forward to launching Jean-Paul Gaultier in India soon.”

TSG will also be opening a second Moschino boutique in Delhi (the first being at the Taj Mahal Palace and Towers in Mumbai) along with introducing Moschino menswear early next year. Says Charu, “It’s been two years since Moschino launched in India, and the label is doing very well. This proves that there is tremendous potential for luxury goods in India, but it requires a lot of patience, hard work and dedication for an international brand to succeed here.”

She seems to have all those qualities and more in abundance.
